What Is ATS? Why Your CV Gets Auto-Rejected in South Africa
Learn what Applicant Tracking Systems are, how they filter CVs in South Africa, and exactly what to do so your CV gets through to a human recruiter.
What is ATS?
ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System. It's software that companies use to manage job applications. When you submit your CV online, it almost never goes straight to a recruiter. It goes into an ATS first.
The ATS parses your CV, extracts information (name, email, work history, skills), and scores it against the job description. If your score is too low, your CV is filtered out. A human never sees it.
In South Africa, most large employers use ATS software. This includes banks (Standard Bank, FNB, Capitec), consulting firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY), retailers (Shoprite, Woolworths), and government departments.
How ATS filters your CV
The ATS looks for three main things:
- Keyword matches: Does your CV contain the skills, qualifications, and experience mentioned in the job ad? If the ad says "financial reporting" and your CV says "preparing reports," the ATS might not make the connection.
- Format compliance: Can the ATS actually read your CV? Tables, text boxes, images, multi-column layouts, and unusual fonts can all prevent the ATS from extracting your information correctly.
- Section structure: The ATS expects standard headings like "Work Experience," "Education," and "Skills." Creative headings like "My Story" or "What I Bring" confuse the parser.
Why most South African CVs fail ATS
We've analysed thousands of CVs through our free ATS checker, and the average score is 38 out of 100. Here's why:
- 72% use formatting that ATS systems can't parse correctly (tables, two-column layouts, headers/footers).
- 65% are missing more than half the keywords from the job ad they're applying for.
- 58% use non-standard section headings that confuse the parser.
- 41% include photos, which many ATS systems choke on.
The result: qualified candidates are being auto-rejected before a recruiter ever opens their CV.
How to make your CV ATS-friendly
- Use a single-column layout with clear section headings.
- Save as PDF (not Word). Modern ATS systems handle PDFs well, and the formatting stays consistent.
- Use the exact keywords from the job advertisement. If they say "stakeholder management," use that phrase, not "working with people."
- Remove photos, graphics, icons, and decorative elements.
- Don't put important information in headers or footers. Many ATS systems skip those entirely.
- Use standard fonts. Calibri, Arial, or similar system fonts.
- Include your phone number in standard format (+27 XX XXX XXXX).
How to check your ATS score
Before applying to any job, you should know your ATS score. Our free checker at cvbuildersa.co.za lets you upload your CV and paste the job ad. You get:
- An overall ATS compatibility score out of 100
- A list of keywords you matched
- A list of keywords you're missing
- Specific formatting issues to fix
Most people are surprised by how low their score is. The good news is that fixing it takes minutes, not hours.
ATS-friendly CV templates
The easiest way to ensure ATS compatibility is to use a template that's already been tested against major ATS systems. CV Builder SA offers 6 templates that are specifically designed to:
- Use clean, single-column layouts that parse correctly
- Include standard section headings that ATS systems recognise
- Format contact details in the way SA recruiters expect
